FTP Instructions for PC

What is FTP and the FTP servers available at IUS
- FTP (File Transfer Protocol) is a communication protocol that governs the transfer of files and folders from one computer to another. At IUS you can FTP files to and from your Homepages folder, Groupsites folder and your home folder (the folder that is automatically mapped to your H: Drive on campus)
- On the IUS campus computers (PC/Windows computers only) your home folder is automatically mapped as drive "H". If you do not have an "H" drive on campus, then you do not have a home folder to access via the Ftp.ius.edu FTP server.
- On the IUS campus computers (PC/Windows computers only) your web folder is automatically mapped as drive "W". If you do not have a "W" drive on campus, then you do not have a web folder to access via the WebFTP.ius.edu FTP server. To create a web folder please use the SpinWeb program.
- Once your home folder and/or SpinWeb account has been established, you will also need software that will allow you to use FTP to publish files to the servers. One of the easiest programs already available on a PC that supports FTP is the Internet Explorer.

How to FTP using the Internet Explorer
- Step 1: Launching Internet Explorer
- For Windows 95, 98, NT, 2000 users start the Internet Explorer (Start --> Programs --> Internet Explorer)
- For Windows XP users start the Internet Explorer (Start -->All Programs --> Internet Explorer)
- Note: In most PCs, Internet Explorer is available on your desktop or as one of the Quick Launch icons.
- Step 2: Connecting to the FTP server
- To transfer files from your home folder (i.e. your H: drive folder)
- Type ftp://ftp.ius.edu in the address bar as shown in Figure 1.
- For User Name: ADS/IUS username (for example: ADS/JDOE)
- For Password: IUS Password
- You will be placed at the root of the FTP server, which is analogous to the i:\users drive when you are logged on to the IUS network.
- To get to your home folder: double click on "i" where "i" is the first letter of your username and then double click on your username.
- To transfer files from your web folder (i.e. your homepages folder or W: drive folder)
- Type ftp://webftp.ius.edu in the address bar as shown in Figure 2.
- For User Name: ADS/IUS username (for example: ADS/JDOE)
- For Password: IUS Password
- You will be placed in your Web folder, which is analogous to the W: drive when you are logged on to the IUS network.
- To transfer files from your GroupSites
- Type ftp://webftp.ius.edu/yoursitename in the address bar as shown in Figure 3.
- For User Name: ADS/IUS username (for example: ADS/JDOE)
- For Password: IUS Password
- You will be placed in your Groupsite folder for which you have rights to edit.
- Step 3: Transfer files to and from the FTP server
- The file transfer process is very easy, requiring just a few mouse clicks. You can simply drag and drop your files and or folders into the Internet Explorer Window.
- A status indicator (see Figure 4) may pop-up and displays the progress of the transfer depending on the speed of your connection.
- For smaller files/folders, it may merely flash across the screen.
- Note: Existing files/folders must not be overwritten unless you intend to! If there is a file/folder that has the same name as the one being sent, the user MUST rename the file first and then transfer it.
- Step 4: Logging off or disconnecting from the FTP server
- To log off or disconnect, simply close Internet Explorer or go to another Web site or FTP location. If you should need further assistance, please contact the IUS Webmaster.
