Video Conferencing/Distance Learning

horizontal gray bar

Video conferencing uses a two-way communications system that allows faculty, staff, and students to see, hear, and speak to each other, even when they are separated by distance.

There are a growing number of video conferencing facilities around the IUS campus.

Scheduling a Conference

  • To schedule a point-to-point conference (IUS to one other location) or for help scheduling a multi-party conference (IUS to multiple locations) call 941-2257.

Distance Learning Programs

Distance learning classes are originated and received here at IUS using our own videoconferencing facilities. For information about these programs, call Sheying Chen, Associate Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs at 941-2210.

Multiple Systems on Campus

IUS maintains outstanding facilities for videoconferencing utilizing two-way video. The system in operation is:

  • VIC (Virtual Indiana Campus)
This system consists of two separate facilities at IUS, each of which link with the other seven Indiana University campuses. It consists of the video classroom in Hillside Hall room 102 and has two-way video and audio for up to 30 students. This room is used for distance education and larger conference groups. The second facility is Knobview Hall room 112. This room has two-way video and audio for conference groups up to 10

This facility is relatively easy to use but it does require some training and familiarization. For training, scheduling, and consultation, or other information concerning use, contact the Media Services scheduling coordinator at ext. 2257. It should be noted that events in these facilities are often scheduled at random and must take priority over any other groups that may be using these rooms for something other than their intended purpose.

Faculty wishing to develop either web-based or video-based distance education courses should consult with the Office of Academic Affairs.
